@kjady@mycya4me I would feel the same – I’m catless at the moment but, being out in the country, i definitely don’t want to put out a buffet for the squirrels, mice, etc., either! Although, the birds still like my yard because the fenced-in section probably feels safer to them, & the whole thing is overgrown enough to provide seeds, berries, acorns – a whole smorgasbord! And, fortunately, we have plenty of owls around to take care of some mice…
@kjady If you think about it, bird feeders are really efficiaent as mine is a combination bird-squirell-chipmunk-cat-hawk-fox feeder. You can add more animals when you’re away from urban areas too.
@chienfou@Felicianomiko@macromeh The food chain needs no help at my house. Last night Sh0rtie brought in a live mouse and killed it in the kitchen. I don’t mind them hunting as they usually eat it but having an attractant isn’t ethical cat or other wise.
@kjady
Likewise I don’t mind my cats hunting but I really prefer that they do their carnage outside. Bandit brought in a chipmunk and then let it go in the house one time. The only problem is the escapee set up residence inside the bottom of my refrigerator. It ended up squirreling away a bunch of cat food (from the feeder) in the back of the fridge and then eating through the compressor fan wires causing the compressor to overheat and the fridge to fail. That sucked!
@tweezak Thankfully I have few of those here. But rats did try to move into the yard last month. Taken out 3 with the BB rifle so far and haven’t seen any more. One can hope.
@Felicianomiko@tweezak We had a family of rats that were helping themselves to the chickens’ feed. I took out several with my air rifle, but they quickly wised up to that. I caught several with traps, but never seemed to get them all. Then one day, I found a trap with a partially eaten rat. Not long after, the rats were all gone. AFAICT, a weasel (or weasels) took them out. (Fortunately the predator didn’t seem interested in the chickens.)
The circle of life.
@Kyeh@therealjrn
I saw it again today. It has a gimpy foot, which is probably why it’s been hanging out in the neighborhood. Avoiding the coyotes.
Meh doesn’t let me add photos these days.
@kittykat9180@Kyeh Yeah, I don’t see any way to add photos on my phone…I’m using the meh app most of the time.
But there is kind of a work around. I can upload to a free image hosting site, then hot-link the file in a post to meh.
Or, hot-link images from the internet such as memes and such. Of course we can still use mediocrebot with “/showme”, “/giphy”, and “/image”. (I hope I used the Oxford comma correctly).
@kittykat9180@Kyeh@therealjrn
At the risk of assuming that you haven’t seen this before: it seems it only works if your phone is in landscape (not portrait) mode.

Nothing happens when I click upload.
I can add images if it’s an original comment. But if I’m replying, it won’t upload images for me.
@kittykat9180@Kyeh@therealjrn
That’s weird. I know there’s two steps.
Hit the upload button ( and pick your pic)
Then hit OK (I forget THAT step sometimes).
Can’t begin to imagine why you can only post to an original comment though.
Here in the city, bird feeders are just RAT feeders! Even the squirrels don’t have a chance at the seeds! Don’t have enough coyotes to balance out the rats.
I dump out a big cup of raw peanuts in the shell by a big maple in my yard, give my best Jay whistle and a dozen or more of the the big beautiful Blue Jays come flocking. I love it. Go Bluejays!
@user74860313 I miss the Blue Jays at my old house. They were the best jerks around. They would wait for the outdoor cats to start feeding and then dive bomb the cats until they ran away. Only then would the Blue Jays eat the cat’s food.
@chienfou@user74860313@yakkoTDI Magpies are brazen little jerks too. Sometimes they sit on one tree squawking loudly at the squirrels and the squirrels furiously chatter back - it all sounds like “#*%$&!!!”
Sorry I don’t want to open an all you can eat bird buffet for my cats.
@kjady great answer.

Feed the food chain…
@chienfou @Felicianomiko @kjady
The food chain doesn’t seem to be having any problems in my neck of the woods! Oy.
@chienfou @Felicianomiko @kjady
Fine, as long as you are the top of the chain…

I can’t decide. The worst part is all the plucking.
Collecting the eggs
@2many2no Our lazy clucks have pretty much shutdown for the winter. We actually had to buy a couple dozen eggs at the store.
I like seeing all the northern birds coming south to Florida
@famwelch We call those the wussies…

/showme a Squirrel in a bird costume.
Juncos leave very large amounts of thigh breathability
@BigStickers Lord knows, some of us need it more than others!
No bears around to (literally) crash the party!
All the hummers migrated but I planted autumn sage for them.
I did recently see a roadrunner in my neighborhood but I’ve never fed those.
@kittykat9180 Roadrunner! How cool!
@kittykat9180 @Kyeh

@jkawaguchi
There are plenty of coyotes where I live.
The best part of feeding birds is that some of those birds are turkeys, and in a few weeks we get to eat them.
@OnionSoup
I have heard that wild turkeys aren’t very tasty. That they are gamey. But I’ve never actually tried one.

@user74860313 @yakkoTDI
Mockingbirds are similar. I’ve seen them do that as well as have aerial combat with blackbirds and crows four times their size.
@chienfou @user74860313 @yakkoTDI Magpies are brazen little jerks too. Sometimes they sit on one tree squawking loudly at the squirrels and the squirrels furiously chatter back - it all sounds like “#*%$&!!!”
Let me know if one of these show up at your feede
…feeder, dammit!
@chienfou Is that an unusually wide stance for a bird?
@phendrick
Personally, can’t say one way or the other.
